California Watermelon Snow [Pics]

If you're currently in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California (USA), then you are in the hands and see a real watermelon snow, having not only the structure and flavor, but color and even taste the watermelon! Here at an altitude of three thousand feet there is a unique wonder of nature.


For thousands of years the secret of snow watermelon (watermelon snow) surprised scientists around the world. Even in Aristotle's treatise on the nature was marked by this natural phenomenon. It is this snow attracts the slopes of local mountains climbers from around the world. Huge expanses of pink snow to open by late spring. And the mystery, as many might have guessed, lies in the microscopic algae called Chlamydomonas nivalis.

Every inch of snow, millions of microscopic particles, the depth can reach 25 centimeters. Local people sometimes eat the snow, so as to distinguish it from the watermelon, watermelon ice cream or rather, it is quite difficult. However, some of these algae are toxic.

Not fatal, but welcome them inside can cause diarrhea, pink ...:) In general, the algae themselves in nature - green. Pink they are only for protection from the strong ultraviolet spring that melts the snow, beneath which are hidden throughout the year and algae.

If you are lucky enough to get on the slopes of the mountains, keep in mind that yellow snow does not smell of lemon, and taste it should not be too:)
